If I asked you whether you would want to live longer and avoid serious health issues, I'm pretty sure you'd answer with an unequivocal "Yes!"

Advertisements are plentiful for all kinds of products and supplements that purport to improve longevity or fend off disease. What may be harder to find, however, are ways you can influence these yourself without "six easy payments."

The Inflammation Link
We now know that many diseases are linked to low-grade inflammation in the body. If we can lower inflammation through our diets, there is a good chance of lowering incidence of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis and other medical issues.

Most health care professional concur that if an individual follows the basic principles outlined below for clean, anti-inflammatory eating, many illnesses could be prevented.

Our Changing Food Supply
Twenty years ago, healthy eating was mostly about balance -- assessing how much carbohydrate, protein and fat was consumed, and making sure plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables were part of the mix.
Today, our diet is heavily influenced by how our food supply has changed, how animals are fed, and the plethora of new products on the market. Navigating what to eat is much more complicated.
The documentary Food, Inc. clearly illustrates how food suppliers produce a vast amount of food at an affordable price -- but at a great cost to our health. Animals raised for food consume corn instead of grass, live in factories instead of on farms, and are raised in less than half the amount of time than in the past.
Corn has become the prominent food for farm animals, and the main component in processed foods. Ninety percent of the products on grocery shelves contain a corn or soybean ingredient.
So, why is this bad? Enter omega-3 and omega-6 fats.
Battle of the Omegas
Cows were not designed by evolution to eat corn. When animals eat grass, the products they produce are rich in fats called omega-3 fatty acids. When they consume corn, omega-6 fats are more prevalent.
This is important because omega-6 fats increase inflammation in the body, while omega-3 fats decrease inflammation. Research shows that the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in our diet 100 years ago was approximately 2-to-1. Recent estimates show our food supply has changed the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats to a whopping 20-to-1.
When we eat large amounts of omega-6 fats, these compete with the omega-3's, which affects not only inflammation, but can also increase diseases linked to inflammation.
Increasing our intake of the three omega-3 fats -- ALA, DHA and EPA -- and lowering our intake of omega-6 fats could be the link toward health and increased longevity.
10 Steps to Anti-Inflammatory Eating
Given what we know, how can we shift the balance and take back our health and happiness? Here are some principles to follow:
1. Choose grass-fed meat and pastured, organic poultry (those that eat a combination of grass, other plants, insects, etc.).
2. Consume wild fish several times a week, such as salmon, sardines and black cod.
3. Eat certified, pastured organic, free-range eggs and choose organic dairy and grass-fed cheese.
4. Eat carbohydrates in their natural state -- organic fruits and vegetables, nuts/seeds, brown/wild rice, quinoa, etc. and limit starchy and/or processed carbohydrates. Consume at least one dark green leafy vegetable and one orange/yellow/red vegetable per day.
5. Limit foods high in flours and sugars, especially foods in a package with more than five ingredients.
6. Use extra-virgin olive oil, and lower your intake of omega-6 oils such as soybean, cottonseed, corn, vegetable, safflower and sunflower.
7. Choose monounsaturated fats such as nuts, seeds and avocado.
8. Choose foods that are non-GMO (genetically modified organisms). Changing the DNA of a food crop can ultimately change how the food acts in our bodies. 9. Drink tea, especially green tea, and limit coffee. Tea contains an amino acid known as L-theanine, which has been shown to counter the normal effects of caffeine, such as high blood pressure and headaches. Minimize alcohol.
10. Consider taking an omega-3 supplement with at least 500 mg. of each of the omega 3-fats DHA and EPA. Even if you consume fish several times a week, a supplement ensures you are receiving enough DHA and EPA. Eat at least one tablespoon per day of ground flax seed, high in the omega-3 fat ALA.
These 10 principles may seem challenging to implement at first. Eating a clean, anti-inflammatory diet is a process and requires reviewing all the foods you eat, from snacks to full meals, whether dining at home or at a restaurant.
The most important thing is to "act now." Set small goals for yourself. Start with your breakfast and then make adjustments to your other meals. Lifestyle change takes time, but commitment will bring you the healthy results you desire.

Nice article, but what I miss is the use of saturated fat. Better limit virgin cold-pressed olive oil and use tallow, lard and coconut oil. Only use butter and ghee when you aren’t dairy intolerant. Furthermore you better can avoid grains, nightshades and legumes (including soy and peanuts) because of the lectins and other harmful proteins they contain. As general advice I will continue to this as speculative B.S. until I see solid research and support for it. A well-balanced vegetarian diet that includes these is more important than the supposed "benefits" of elminating a nightshade like tomatoes (or brown rice or beans or tofu for that matter as you suggest). I mean, who can argue that lycopene-packed tomatoes are terrible things to consume. Whatever. I take this with a grain of salt (which makes it pretty delicious, actually).

    What's REALLY is our conventional food supply is good reason to go vegan, and there are plenty of other reasons to go vegan, also.

    About selecting a different kind of meat, Susan, GIVE US A BREAK!
    While being vegan is fine for some folks, there are others that cannot be on that type of diet due to metabolic or medical issues. Being vegan cuts out many food groups and requires diligence in meeting nutritional needs which does not fit everyone's lifestyle. I don't believe being vegan, vegetarian or other is the issue. The real issue is whether you are eating real whole foods, free of processing, additives, preservatives, hormones, etc. That is the key to health.

      As a former cancer patient, I am trying hard to keep up with the latest advice on healthy and nutritious eating.

      It is terribly confusing. It seems that everyone has a slightly different take on the topic.

      I keep going back to what I learned from my Serbian grandmother - plenty of vegetables, fruit, beans and nuts. Everything else is extra.

      It's tough, research keeps changing its mind about food. They now know the "old country" diet was good for us. Meat is not bad for us, though prepared/lunch meats are.

      Processed carbs are what's bad for us. Grains and things made from them. Humans have only been eating them for 10,000 years. We should be eating like hunter/gatherers: veggies and meat.

      You should Google "melatonin cancer". I take 3 mgs every night right before bed. Helps me sleep, and may prevent cancer. I posted this yesterday. Good luck, be healthy.

        Turmeric, active ingredient Curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory, also prevents prostate cancer.

        It's the yellow in curry. Researchers notice that some parts of India had almost no prostate cancer, and discovered it was those where yellow curry was eaten the most.

        It's great to cook with but watch out! It stains everything, permanently.

        Great post! I'd heard the same information over the years and tried to add the spice to my cooking. But I couldn't seem to like the flavor. I gave up a for a while. Then I saw my co-op carried empty capsules in bulk made from starch and not gelatin. I bought a bunch and filled them with fresh turmeric. Now I can take as much as I want and not have to struggle with including the spice in meals. Highly recommended! Fanned and FAved!

            My doctor put me on this diet a month ago. It's a big change for me and I haven't got it all worked out yet. I'm still investigating vegetable proteins but have basically cut out most meat, and I have cut out a lot of sugar and white flour. I'm definitely losing inches on this. But it's also for my long-term health and I'm hoping it helps reverse the food sins of the past. BTW, this is a great time of the year to find local vegetables!!

              Thanks for the healthy reminders Ms. Dopart. As a vegetarian, I eat darn well but still have room for improvement.
              mary, I so agree. Even on the plant based diet I can still have my weak days when out with friends to a restaurant or such though I do a pretty good job of getting right back on track the next day because I can feel the difference. I've been cutting down on my coffee to just a small cup of cappucino in the AM, organic of course but think I'll even cut that out and stick with green tea. Yes, always room for improvement.
              Don't forget turmeric . I try to sneak it onto everything.

                Every 20 or 30 years this all changes. I am convinced that in 50 years time doctors will decide we all died young from not enough tobacco and obesity-lol

                I think this is very misleading and vague - exactly what illnesses are these? And what health care professionals agree? And on exactly what?

                My loved one has diabetes type 1 that is not going away. And how about my rosacea or my asthma and allergies?

                If there was a magic diet that would halt, or cure, lupus, diabetes I, and the whole host of other inflammatory-related disease I'd like to see it published. It would bring hope to millions. If only it were that simple.
                Most chronic diseases are caused by inflammation. Inflammation is only useful to the body if it is localized and doesn't extend beyond the acute phase, and low inflammation diets do help all the diseases you mentioned.
